I liked how you teased all these different layers apart and I agree that it’s helpful to have a “Yes if” and “No if” list before the fact.
It reminds me of something that Jack Canfield’s coach, Brian Whetten, once shared with me. He said that one can get paid in 3 currencies:
- money
- growth
- contribution.
Brian mentioned that out of these three, money is the least important form of payment (which is kind of counter-cultural, I guess).
So, I think that can be another filter to run this question through. If the speaking gig likely won’t lead to a financial gain later on (for instance, through contact with a potential client), will it allow me to grow or contribute in a way that’s meaningful/helpful to me?
