I like your idea of aiming for B- for the draft, and then for A+++ during the edit, Jennifer.
It reminded me of advice I found back when I wrote my Ph.D. thesis:
a book I read about the writing process recommended aiming for a *sh*tty first draft,” and for cleaning that up during the editing process (rather than trying to write and edit at the same time).
I think the advice you give about using voice typing could also help with getting such a draft in place.
I think this quote nails the ideal relationship between the first draft and the final product: “I’m not a very good writer, but I’m an excellent rewriter.” ~ James Mitchner
